Trip Overview

Island peak climbing is a famous expedition-style trekking peak in Nepal. This peak offers a great introduction to peak climbing in the Himalayas. Located in the Khumbu region, the Island Peak (6,189 m/20,305 ft) was first climbed by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary during their 1953 Mount Everest Expedition.

Island peak is known as Imja Tse in Nepali words. Climbing Island peak does not involve technical challenges, however demands strong mental and physical fitness. The Island's peak difficulty level is graded Alpine PD+, which means the mountain is not technically challenging but physically very demanding.

Following our Island peak climbing itinerary, you will also trek to Everest Base Camp and witness breathtaking mountain panorama from the famous Kala Patthar. Many mountaineers climb Island peak to acclimatize before pushing towards bigger mountains. You will learn a lot about climbing and get to know the Himalayan climate.

Our Island peak climbing expedition is supported by experienced Sherpas and porters to make the journey smooth and hassle-free for you. We will take care of all the logistics involved during the Island peak climbing. We assure you of a safe Island peak climbing in Nepal.

Why Island peak climbing?

We love Island peak climbing because it provides the ultimate adventure in the Everest region. You will get to experience both trekking and climbing on this trip. Explore beautiful Sherpa villages, walk through lush rhododendron forests, cross thrilling suspension bridges, and whatnot.

The trekking route gradually ascends and opens up the mountain views. The trail is surrounded by hundreds of peaks and mountains. You will witness breathtaking vistas of Everest (8,849 m/29,032 ft), Lhotse (8,516 m/27,940 ft, Kanchenjunga (8,586 m/28,169 ft), Makalu (8,463 m/27,766 ft), Thamserku (6,608 m/21,680 ft), Ama Dablam (6,812 m/22,349 ft), etc.

Is climbing Island peak right for you?

You do not need previous climbing experience for Island peak climbing. If you are an active individual and have been trekking, you can aim for Island peak. If you are confused about whether climbing Island peak is right for you or not, feel free to talk to our team. They will assess your fitness and recommend the best possibility.

Island peak climbing route

From Chhukung, the trail ascends to Island Peak Base Camp at 5,200 meters (17,060 ft). The climbing route involves rocky ridges and snow mantles. On the summit day, you will leave the base camp around 2:00 AM to 3:00 AM and begin climbing on a rocky ridge to the glacier. Above the ridge, there is a steep snow headwall that leads to the summit.

During your pre-climbing training, you will learn the basic climbing techniques, which will boost your confidence. Our mountain guides will fix the route with the ropes for your safety. You will use climbing gear like harnesses and jumar. The final ascent before the summit ridge involves a 60 - 70 degree face about 150 meters long.

Lodge and camping accommodation

During the Island peak climbing 19 days, you will stay overnight in lodges in the villages and an alpine tent at the base camp. Runned by the locals, the lodges offer basic but comfortable and clean spaces to spend the night. The washroom will be common in most villages. You can also upgrade to luxury lodges if you wish.

Likewise, our team will carry the necessary tents for the Island Peak Base Camp. They will set the tents and prepare the meals. As you will be following the mainstream Everest rail during the Island peak climbing, you will get a huge variety of food and drinks. We highly recommend buying your favorite snacks and bars in Kathmandu for the journey.
